Trans Grischun: Swiss Gravel Adventure Across Graubünden
The Trans Grischun is a three-day gravel cycling adventure traversing the Swiss canton of Graubünden from west to east, showcasing the region’s rich cultural and natural diversity. Starting in Disentis and ending in Zernez, the route combines high mountain passes, scenic valleys, and charming alpine villages. It’s a demanding ride with significant elevation gains and unpredictable weather, requiring versatility from both rider and bike
The first day takes us from Disentis to Vella. Despite initial rain and some challenging off-road sections, the route quickly reveals its raw beauty with steep climbs, singletrack detours, and rewarding descents. The highlight is a demanding ascent to over 2000 meters, ending in a beautiful gravel descent to Vella.
The second day is the longest and toughest: 100 kilometers and 2100 meters of climbing. Following the Rhine valley, we tackle the Imschlacht climb and navigate detours caused by construction. A tight schedule forces a quick lunch and a race against time to catch a train under the Flüela Pass. We then remount for the final stretch to Scuol, ending just before the rain sets in.
The final day leads over the breathtaking Costainas Pass, a scenic 21-kilometer climb through ever-changing landscapes—from gorges and pine forests to alpine meadows. Despite frigid temps and icy winds, it’s the most stunning ride of the trip. A smooth gravel descent and a final push over the Ofenpass leads us into Zernez, with the rain holding off just long enough to celebrate a successful finish.
The Trans Grischun is a true tribute to the rugged beauty of Graubünden—challenging, diverse, and unforgettable.
